Thematic Exhibition : RONGWE PANELS OF THE NIGERIAN EJAGHAM
100cm x 110cm rattan, animal skull, vegetable fiber
This panel is the emblem of the very powerful secret society ngbe, dedicated to the cult of the tutelary spirit of the leopard. The stitched branches represent a pair of ceremonial brooms similar to those worn by high-ranking members as a sign of their sacred authority. The drum evokes the sacred ngbe instrument, at the heart of the original myth. The skulls are those of animals sacrificed during the founding feast of the Ngbe Lodge. The thick black patina results from exposure to smoke in the House of the Secret Society.
